There are various reasons - lack of support for families by relatives, extreme poverty, existence of child disability and social exclusion. Most of the abandon children do not keep relationship with their families.
In Bulgaria the beliefs that the only place for a baby with disability is the social homes and the “state” is a good mother has been widespread for many years. We, the specialists from “For Our Children" Foundation know well that it is not so. That’s why we haven’t been stopping since 1997 to recruit foster parents to take care for vulnerable Bulgarian children.
Foster care is a care for child at risk in a family environment. This may be a child who lives in a social institution or child whose family for a certain period for different reasons. Foster care gives children chance to not be placed in one of the 140 social homes in Bulgaria, but to go to a family who will replace parental care until the problem in the family be solved. The foster care is a good alternative for children living in social institutions to have a happy childhood surrounded by love and attention in an environment that allows them to fully develop, which can not happen in the social institutions for children.
